Is vaping really better than smoking?

Lots of young people try vaping instead of smoking because they believe it’s safer.

We all know that smoking normal cigarettes is dangerous, and that it’s linked to cancer, heart disease and lots of other illnesses.

But vaping? Yes, there are fewer toxic chemicals than in cigarettes, but a vape still contains nicotine, which is still addictive and still not safe.

Fake vapes are even riskier, because nobody’s checking what’s in them.

It may be safer, but it's not better

In Coventry and Warwickshire, 78% of children and young people we surveyed said that they thought vaping isn't safe.

For people (mainly adults) who smoke real cigarettes, vaping is thought to be less harmful. So, vapes can be used as a medical device to help them stop smoking.

But for young people who’ve never smoked, vaping just adds health risks that you don’t need.

Avoiding nicotine products completely is the safest choice.
